What is reflexology?

Imagine a world where you had all the energy you needed to deal with life's demands, where you start your days feeling energized and stimulated rather than reaching for the snooze button.

Most of us spend our days juggling the demands of friends, family and work leaving little time for ourselves. This can cause a build up of stress which prematurely age us and leave us more vulnerable to illness.

By changing how you deal with stress you can reduce its impact.

Your feet are a mini representation of the body - a perfect microcosm.

Reflexology is a wonderful way of allowing the nervous system to return to balance, allowing functions in the body to return to normal. Once the body is balanced and relaxed it can repair and renew itself.

There are approximately 7,000 nerve endings in your feet and reflexology uses specific nerve reflexes (pressure points) to stimulate these nerves and create positive change in your body.

It is fantastic for calming the mind, relaxing, balancing hormones and allowing stress to fade away. It improves circulation, stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce bloating and excess fluid, reducing the body’s toxic load.

As part of the reflexology treatment, we discuss in detail your current health and lifestyle habits to provide you with information and tools to improve your own self awareness of your body's needs to help accelerate the healing process.

Our reflexologist is trained to feel tiny deposits and imbalances and by working on these points, release blockages and restore the flow of energy to the body.

All treatments are tailored to the individual.

How long has reflexology been around?
It is believed to have origins in Ancient Egypt, as reflexology is recorded on hieroglyphics at the Ankhm'ahor (the physician's tomb).

Benefits of reflexology

Reflexology is your time. Time for yourself. Time to switch off and be pampered while receiving the health benefits of detoxification and improved circulation. It reduces feelings of stress, anxiety and nervousness.

Customised treatments address the person as a whole and deal with root causes not just symptoms. They can also be preventative, helping to relieve accumulated stress. Since reflexology is non-invasive it can be used by anyone, from children right through to the elderly.
It is effective in dealing with:
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Low energy levels
  • Digestive disorders
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Back/Shoulder/Neck Pain
  • Migraines/Headaches
  • Sleep disorders
  • Infertility
  • Reducing the toxic burden on the body
  • Stimulating the immune system
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Respiratory problems
More scientific research is being undertaken each year, and more benefits are being uncovered by the scientific community. The published reflexology research section of the website details the current published reflexology research.

How many treatments are required?

Most people feel an immediate improvement in sleep and energy levels the day after a treatment.

However, each person is unique and their response to ill health and the treatment will vary accordingly.

Most people need around 3 treatments to detox and eliminate waste from the body to allow the healing phase to start. The number of treatments required will vary according to the nature of your conditions/state of health, your sensitivity to the treatment and any lifestyle changes you make.

Can it make a condition worse?

Reflexology is non-invasive. It can cause a temporary worsening of symptoms due to the elimination of toxins within the body. You may feel worse and believe the treatment is not working, but these reactions show that the treatment is working and the body is trying to cleanse itself of toxins and impurities. This is only temporary.

There are things you can do to help this process.
  • Drink plenty of water, juices and herbal teas to help flush toxins from the body.
  • If you are feeling tired/sleepy, take things easy and sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine and other stimulants during this time.

Pregnancy and reflexology *

Nearly everyone can benefit from having reflexology during pregnancy.

There are some studies which suggest that reflexology helps to reduce complications during pregnancy and can make for an easier and shorter birth.

There are some circumstances where reflexology is contra-indicated. These include:
• Placenta Previa (low lying afterbirth) if Grade II & III and 32 weeks or more.
• Hydro amnios (too much water around the baby) if 32 weeks or more. If there is any doubt in your mind then treatment is contraindicated.

Levelfooting has had a great deal of experience working with pregnant women, throughout their pregnancy and also works with the Birth Company in Harley Street to help women who have passed their due date.

It is particularly effective in the last few months of pregnancy where water retention, skeletal and hip problems can become an issue and for many sleep starts to be affected.

Can I use it with my medication?*

Reflexology works by helping the body function at an optimal level. There are some circumstances where this may mean that you don't need as high a dose of medication as you would do when not attending for reflexology. However any change in dosage or frequency of medication must always be discussed with your doctor prior to alteration. Contrary to popular belief, reflexology cannot “flush the system” of medication.

Difference between the first and subsequent sessions?

What is the treatment like?*

There is an initial chat with the practitioner. The reflexologist then begins to work on your feet, noting problem areas.

The practitioner can detect subtle changes in specific points on the feet, and by working on these points may affect the corresponding organ or system of the body. The application and the effect of the therapy is unique to each person.

There may be discomfort in some places, but it is fleeting, and is an indication of congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of the body. For the most part, the sensation is pleasant and soothing.

The treatment time will vary according to your body's needs, which can last up to 2 hours.

After the first treatment or two your body may respond in a very definite way: you may have a feeling of well-being and relaxation; or you may feel lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is transitory. It is your body's way of letting go, both physically and emotionally.
